Will the Buddhist text be provided for as part of this program?
Yes, we will have printed copies of the Dighanikaya text  which will be available for everyone to use. We would ask that these copies remain at  Mangalam as they will be used every year for the chanting program.
May I participate for part of the chanting program?
Yes, you may participate in this chanting program for as long as you would like. You are welcome to join as long as your time permits (1 day, 2 days, or the entire period). We would of course appreciate the continuity of your participation.
Will dinner be provided on the first two evenings?
Dinner will not be provided on the first two evenings. There are numerous local restaurants in the area in case you need to get a light evening meal before the dharma talks. On the last evening, we will be providing light evening snacks at the cultural program. Vegetarian lunch will be offered to all participants for all three days.
For the Silent Peace Walk on September 22nd, may I wear traditional national dress?
Yes, we would encourage you to wear your traditional costume to display the Buddhist culture. We would also like to encourage lay devoteees to wear white dress if possible.
Inner Peace Walk from the Nyingma Institute to Mangalam Centers,
September 22nd, 8:30 AM (please arrive at Institute by 8:15 AM)
The Peace Walk will begin at 8:30 AM, but we are asking participants to assemble at the Nyingma Institute by 8:15 AM. Monastics will gather in our meditation hall (at 2727 Hearst). Lay people will gather in the Nyingma Institute’s lobby (at 1815 Highland Place). There will be tea and coffee available for those who arrive early. All lay people will receive a button to wear identifying them as being part of the peace walk.
The monastics will begin the walk by circumambulating the Stupa in the Institute’s meditation garden followed by the lay people. All will then proceed in silence from the Institute to the Mangalam Centers on the corner of Allston Way and Harold Way (2018 Allston Way). The walk route will be marked with flowers and flags, with volunteers stationed along the way to guide participants to the destination. The description below and attached maps show the Peace Walk route.
Directions to the Nyingma Institute:
Driving Directions: From I 80, take the University Avenue exit and drive east, uphill to Oxford Street. Turn left onto Oxford and continue two blocks to Hearst Avenue. Turn right onto Hearst Avenue and proceed uphill. After passing under the pedestrian bridge at Foothill dormitory, turn left on Highland Place to arrive at our entrance at 1815 Highland Place. The following link will give you full directions from your point of departure
Monastics should proceed on Hearst Avenue past Highland Place for about 50 feet, and then turn left into our private parking lot at 2727 Hearst. Attendants will be there to help you park and escort you to our meditation hall. Please notify Wangmo Dixey in advance (at or by phone at 510-809-1025 if you are a monastic who will require a parking space.
Public Transportation Directions (from the Downtown Berkeley BART station or Mangalam Research Center):
CAL Shuttle P1 line: board at Shattuck and Addison; disembark Cory Hall (Hearst Avenue and Le Roy Avenue); cost: $1; runs every 30 minutes starting at 7 AM; eight minute bus ride; steep walk two short blocks to Institute.
CAL Shuttle P2 line: board at Shattuck and Addison; disembark Cory Hall (Hearst Avenue and Le Roy Avenue); cost:  $1; runs every 20 minutes starting at 6:45 AM; seven minute bus ride; steep walk two short blocks to Institute.
AC Transit F: board at Shattuck and Center (just across the street from the BART station); disembark Cory Hall (Hearst Avenue and Le Roy Avenue); cost: $2.10; runs every 30 minutes starting at 7:16 AM; seven minute bus ride; steep walk two short blocks to Institute.
Walk from the bus stop at Hearst and Le Roy Avenue: walk uphill on Hearst two blocks to Highland Place, turn left and proceed to the Nyingma Institute’s main entrance at 1815 (yellow building with green stairs).
Parking: We recommend that participants take public transportation or car pool to the Institute. On-street parking is difficult to find and our private parking lot will be reserved for the use of the monastic Sangha. 
Parking Options:
Parking for lay people:
1. Park at the Berkeley City Parking Garage at 2061 Alston Way Garage (opposite Mangalam Centers); $9 all day if in by 9 AM; $17 daily maximum otherwise. Then take the bus or UC shuttle to the Nyingma Institute (see instructions above).
2. Drive to the Lower Hearst Avenue Garage, on Hearst Avenue between Euclid and Scenic (a steep three-block walk up Hearst to the Nyingma Institute). You may park only on Level 2 Gold Zone; Cost: $1 for first hour and $2 per hour thereafter.
3. Street parking near the Nyingma Institute is limited and cars must be moved by 10 AM to avoid tickets.
Parking for Monastics: Turn into parking lot at 2727 Hearst (just uphill from Highland Place).
Inner Peace Walk Route (Note that volunteers will be stationed along the way to guide participants to the destination.)

  1. Proceed from the Nyingma Institute’s meditation garden down one flight of stairs through the Institute’s lobby and out the main entrance. Proceed down left side of green stairs; walk left to the corner of Highland Place and Hearst Avenue.
  2. Cross Highland Place and proceed down Hearst on the north side of the street, cross Gayley and then cross left across Hearst, walking on the west side of Gayley Road.
  3. Turn right and walk down University Drive, keeping to the right around the Hearst Mining Circle, until it rejoins University Drive and go right to continue downhill.
  4. Follow the right branch of the path, cross University Drive and enter the path through Memorial Glade.
  5. After walking through the glade, turn right toward University Drive and then follow it down hill on the south side of the street.
  6. Turn left after the Moffitt Library to take the path past Valley Life Sciences Building to where it joins the circle.
  7. Follow the circle to the left to University Drive and turn left down the West Entrance Road.
  8. Turn left at Oxford, staying on the east side of the street.
  9. Walk to Kittredge and cross to the north side of Kittredge and continue across Shattuck to Mangalam Centers at 2018 Allston Way.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

FROM SAN FRANCISCO AIRPORT (SFO): The Downtown Berkeley station is located on Shattuck Avenue between Center Street and Allston Way. From the San Francisco Airport, take the Pittsburg/Bay Point train from just outside the baggage area to 19th Avenue Oakland station. Get off the train and change to the Richmond train which will be waiting just across the platform. Proceed to Downtown Berkeley station and get off. Fare is $9.25. Go up to Shattuck Avenue and go south to Allston Way – the Shattuck Plaza Hotel is on the corner. Walk down Allston Way (West toward the ocean) one block to Harold Way. The Mangalam Research Center is on the corner of Allston Way and Harold Way, 2018 Allston Way. Note that the opposite direction is to depart from Downtown Berkeley on the Fremont train, change at MacArthur station for the San Francisco Airport train waiting right across the platform. .You can buy the BART tickets at the ticket machine inside the station. This link will give you a trip planner for BART – go online and put in your expected time of departure and a scheduler will give you a train schedules.

FROM OAKLAND AIRPORT (OAK): Coming from the Oakland Airport, take the airport BART bus to the Coliseum station. It leaves from the center island between terminals 1 & 2. A fare of $3 exact change is required. Take the Richmond train to Downtown Berkeley and follow the instructions for walking to Mangalam Research Center above. Train is $2.50 one way after the BART bus fare, $5.50 total. You can buy the BART tickets at the ticket machine inside the station. The return trip is to depart from Downtown Berkeley and exit at Coliseum/Oakland Airport. The BART bus for $3 fare is right outside the station and will take you to the airport. As mentioned above, this is a link to the online BART scheduler where you can input your departure times to get a train schedule. In general, trains run every 20 or 30 mins.

What can/can’t I bring to the event?

Please bring comfortable dress wear, no short skirts as we will be sitting in meditation hall to do the chanting.Many lay devotees or participants will be wearing white.
