A New Path to Discover the Buddha
For thousands of years, spiritual seekers have walked to discover the sacred, to purify the heart, and to deepen their understanding of life’s purpose. Across cultures from the Camino de Santiago in Spain to the Shikoku Pilgrimage in Japan walking has been revered as a spiritual practice, transforming the journey itself into a form of meditation and awakening.
In India the land where the Buddha lived, walked, and taught the Light of Buddha Dhamma Foundation International (LBDFI) has been reviving sacred pilgrimage routes by foot, reconnecting devotees with the geography of enlightenment. For the past 12+ years, LBDFI has coordinated historic Dhamma walks that retrace the Buddha’s footsteps and those of his disciples across Bihar and beyond.
These walking pilgrimages are not only pathways through history they are living rituals of devotion, community, and inner transformation
GLOBAL CONTEXT: WALKING AS A UNIVERSAL PRACTICE
Across centuries and continents, walking pilgrimages have offered a way to:
- Unite physical movement with spiritual insight
- Build community through shared purpose
- Rediscover sacred sites and forgotten histories
- Foster peace, patience, and devotion
The Camino de Santiago in Spain and the 88 Temple Shikoku Pilgrimage in Japan are modern examples of walking for spiritual connection. Now, the Buddha Trails of India Jethian, Gurpa, Vaishālī are coming back to life, thanks to the collective efforts of monks, nuns, scholars, local villagers, and pilgrims like you.
LBDFI is committed to reawakening these sacred footpaths of the Buddha so that future generations can walk, remember, and rejoice in the Dhamma.
